Ford has initiated a substantial recall of 552,188 F-150 trucks from the 2014 model year, addressing a critical transmission issue that may trigger an unexpected downshift to first gear, potentially leading to loss of control and compromised safety.
The root cause of this problem lies in a sensor malfunction, which disrupts the communication between the powertrain control module and the transmission output shaft speed sensor, culminating in an abrupt downshift.
This recall is not an isolated incident, as Ford previously addressed a similar issue in 2019, affecting 2013 F-150s and other models. However, the current recall is specific to the 2014 F-150, encompassing a larger number of vehicles.
Ford has been diligently investigating this issue since February 2024, accumulating numerous reports of unexpected downshifts, including 40 instances of rear wheel lock-up or loss of control, and two alleged injuries.
The remedy involves a software update to the powertrain control module, which requires a visit to a dealership. Ford will begin notifying affected owners on July 1, with the software update available in the third quarter of 2024.
Concerned owners can contact Ford directly for additional information. While the recall affects a significant number of vehicles, Ford estimates that less than one percent of the recalled trucks will actually experience the issue.
A warning light on the dashboard may illuminate before a downshift occurs, serving as a crucial indicator for drivers. By addressing this critical transmission issue, Ford prioritizes the safety and satisfaction of its customers.
