GR86: The Toyota-Developed Sports Car Subaru Didn’t Dare to Build

Toyota is set to stun the crowd at the SEMA show in Las Vegas with a one-off GR86 that’s been transformed into a rally-inspired beast.

The company has teamed up with Evasive Motorsports to infuse the GR86 with the turbocharged three-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive powertrain from the GR Corolla, effectively creating the BRZ STI that Subaru has refused to build.

Photographer and YouTuber Larry Chen got an exclusive first look at the build in progress and shared a detailed video showcasing the extensive work involved.

According to Mike Chang of Evasive Motorsports, Toyota’s goal was to pay homage to its iconic rally cars of the past, such as the Celica GT4 from the 1990s. By transplanting the GR Corolla’s powertrain into the lighter GR86, this build promises to be an exhilarating ride.

The swap requires outstanding modifications, including new engine, transmission, and differential mounts, as well as chassis adjustments to accommodate the GR Corolla’s drivetrain.

The suspension also needs custom parts and modified hubs to fit the GR Corolla’s four half-shafts and the GR86’s geometry. The attention to detail is impressive, with a focus on maintaining the GR86’s agility while harnessing the power of the GR Corolla’s engine.

This one-off rally special is a testament to Toyota’s commitment to innovation and performance. By combining the best of both worlds, the company has created a unique vehicle that’s sure to turn heads at SEMA. With its rich rally heritage and impressive specs, this GR86 is poised to become a showstopper in Las Vegas.
