The New York Mets have placed reliever Drew Smith on the 15-day injured list due to a sprain in his right elbow, a serious setback for a bullpen already reeling from the suspension of closer Edwin Díaz.
Smith’s injury, which was made retroactive to Monday, comes after he had already spent time on the IL earlier this season with right shoulder soreness. The 30-year-old right-hander has been a key contributor to the Mets’ bullpen, with a 3.06 ERA and two saves in 19 appearances.
To replace Smith on the roster, the Mets have recalled right-hander Ty Adcock from Triple-A Syracuse. Adcock, who made his major league debut with Seattle last season, will be looking to make his Mets debut and provide some much-needed depth to a bullpen that is currently shorthanded.
The Mets are also without Díaz, who is serving a 10-game suspension for having an illegal foreign substance on his hand.
Smith’s injury is a huge blow to the Mets, who are already struggling to find consistency in their bullpen. The team is hoping that Adcock can provide some stability and help fill the void left by Smith’s absence. With the Mets in the midst of a heated Subway Series against the New York Yankees, the loss of Smith could not have come at a worse time.
