Azealia Banks recently went on social media to criticize Ice Spice’s rollout for her new album “Y2K.” Banks didn’t like how Ice Spice’s music and style are shaping up as the release date gets closer.
On Instagram, Banks said, “Someone needs to tell @icespice that none of this looks or sounds like Y2K… It’s more like an early Nicki Minaj look.” She posted this alongside a clip of Ice Spice rapping her latest single, “Phat Butt,” which got shared by The Neighborhood Talk blog.
Continuing her critique, Banks suggested a drastic overhaul: “We need a new hair color and a new facial expression. Ice, I love you down, but you should put the halt button, drop David Lachapelle, and redo this. Big butts and BBL bodies are the ANTITHESIS OF Y2K.” Her remarks highlight a clear disagreement over the artistic direction and visual presentation of Ice Spice’s upcoming album.
Ice Spice, meanwhile, has been actively promoting her “Y2K” album, confirming its release for 2024 after teasing it since November 2023. She recently revealed the album’s cover art and announced a July 26 release date.
During a March 2024 appearance on Hot Ones hosted by Sean Evans, Ice Spice discussed her album’s preparation, mentioning, “Yes, I’ve been playing the album fully through in the car, volume all the way up. It passed, thankfully it passed.” She also hinted at unconventional tracks, saying, “There is a track on the album, I just launched straight into the verse, and there’s not really a hook, so I’m excited to hear what the fans think about that.”
The contrasting viewpoints between Azealia Banks and Ice Spice reflect broader discussions within the music industry about authenticity, artistic vision, and the evolution of genres like Y2K.
Banks’ critique underscores her belief that Ice Spice’s current approach diverges from what she perceives as authentic to the Y2K era, advocating for a more aligned creative direction. As the release date approaches, the response from fans and further developments in Ice Spice’s promotional strategy will likely continue to shape the narrative surrounding her highly anticipated album.
