Pete Alonso drove in a season-high five runs, and Francisco Lindor added a home run as the New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 11-6 on Sunday, completing a five-game sweep and extending their winning streak to five games. Tylor Megill pitched five innings, allowing two runs and five hits, as the Mets built a 7-1 lead and held on despite a late Padres rally.
The Mets’ victory marked their ninth win in 11 games and 11th in 15 since a team meeting following a sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alonso’s three-run homer in the first inning gave the Mets a 4-1 lead, and he added a two-run single in the eighth. J.D. Martinez reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances before striking out in the eighth.
The Padres lost their seventh straight road game and fell below .500 at 37-38. Manager Mike Shildt was ejected in the sixth inning for arguing with plate umpire Adam Beck. San Diego’s Manny Machado was also ejected.
The Mets head on the road, among nine teams within two games of the NL’s last two wild-card spots. “We played great team baseball,” Alonso said. “We can string some wins together, and that’s what we did this homestand, and hopefully we can continue it on the road.”
