The Denver Broncos have brought on David Shaw, the former Stanford head coach, as a senior personnel executive. After stepping down from Stanford in 2022, Shaw had shown a keen interest in returning to the NFL, where he had nearly a decade of experience as an assistant coach.

His professional background includes working with Broncos head coach Sean Payton as rising offensive assistants for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997, along with roles as an assistant coach with the Raiders and the Ravens.

After leaving Stanford, Shaw was a candidate for the Broncos’ head coaching position last year, a role that eventually went to Sean Payton. He also interviewed for head coaching positions with the Chargers and the Titans, jobs that were ultimately filled by Jim Harbaugh and Brian Callahan, respectively.

Despite not securing these roles, Shaw’s extensive coaching experience and NFL background made him a valuable addition to the Broncos’ executive team.

Shaw’s tenure at Stanford was marked by significant achievements, making him the most successful head coach in the school’s history with a record of 96-54.

His career at Stanford began as the offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh in 2007, and he was promoted to head coach in 2011 following Harbaugh’s departure from the NFL. Shaw’s leadership at Stanford was distinguished by his strategic acumen and the development of a competitive football program.

During his time at Stanford, Shaw earned the distinction of being the only four-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, leading the team to three conference championships and two Rose Bowl victories. His success at the collegiate level and previous NFL experience position him well to contribute to the Broncos’ efforts in building a competitive team.
