The Seattle Mariners delivered a dominant performance on Sunday, shutting out the Texas Rangers 5-0 to complete a sweep of their three-game series.
Logan Gilbert was masterful on the mound, striking out nine Rangers and surrendering just two hits over eight innings. The rookie right-hander’s impressive outing was backed by a potent Mariners offense, led by Tyler Locklear’s solo home run in the seventh inning.
The Mariners took an early lead in the fourth inning when Mitch Haniger and Luke Raley hit back-to-back doubles off Rangers starter Dane Dunning. Josh Rojas doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to extend Seattle’s advantage to 2-0. Locklear’s home run, his second since joining the team, provided additional insurance in the seventh.
Gilbert’s stellar performance was a testament to his growing maturity on the mound. The 26-year-old has now won four consecutive starts, and his nine strikeouts on Sunday matched a season high. The Mariners’ bullpen, meanwhile, has been equally impressive, with Paul Sewald and Matt Brash combining to shut the door in the ninth.
With this sweep, the Mariners have won seven of their last eight games and nine straight home series. They have also improved to 12 games over .500, a season high.
As they continue to surge in the American League West, the Mariners are proving themselves to be a force to be reckoned with in the race for the division title.
