The long-anticipated Peaky Blinders movie, ordered by Netflix, is finally becoming a reality! It’s been three years since Steven Knight’s plans to transition the Brummie mob drama to the big screen were first revealed, and two years since the thrilling conclusion of Series 6, which saw Tommy Shelby riding off into the damp horizon.
Now, Deadline has confirmed that Netflix has given the green light to the feature-length continuation of the series. To sweeten the deal, Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby, with series veteran Tom Harper (Wild Rose) directing and Knight penning the script.
Knight has been mulling over a Peaky Blinders film finale for some time, so we already have a good sense of where the story will lead. In a 2022 interview with Empire, Knight mentioned that the Blinders’ saga, initially envisioned as a narrative about Britain between the world wars, would extend “into and beyond the Second World War” for its first movie.
He considered the sixth series as “the end of the beginning.” Additionally, filming details are out—Knight told Birmingham World in March that shooting would commence in Birmingham this September.
Murphy expressed his excitement, stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It’s very gratifying to be working with Steven Knight and Tom Harper again on the film version of Peaky Blinders.
This one is for the fans.” Harper echoed Murphy’s sentiment, reflecting on his initial involvement with the series over a decade ago. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders, we didn’t know what it would become,” he remarked.
“But the combination of the cast and the writing felt explosive. Peaky has always been a family story, so reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring this movie to Netflix audiences is incredibly exciting.”
Knight is equally enthusiastic about the project, promising an electrifying addition to the Peaky Blinders saga. “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is happening,” he shared. “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story—no holds barred, full-on Peaky Blinders at war.” Explosive chapter? Full-on Peaky Blinders at war? We’re definitely in.
