Bayern Munich have bolstered their squad by signing Japanese defender Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart. The move signifies a broader effort to rejuvenate the team with fresh talent. Ito’s arrival is the first major transfer since Vincent Kompany took over as head coach, replacing Thomas Tuchel. The club aims to inject “new energy” into the squad, as emphasized by Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, who praised Ito for his hunger and resilience.

Ito has secured a four-year contract with Bayern, reflecting the club’s long-term plans for him. Although the transfer fee remains undisclosed, sources like the German magazine Kicker suggest Bayern paid an initial €23 million, potentially increasing with add-ons. This acquisition is a significant step for Bayern, signaling the start of potential further changes to their roster.

During his tenure at Stuttgart since 2021, Ito played a crucial role in their impressive run to second place in the Bundesliga this season, finishing ahead of Bayern. His versatility in defense, capable of playing both central defense and covering roles in defensive midfield and left-back, makes him a valuable addition.

This depth was much needed, especially after frequent injuries last season and the departure of Eric Dier following his loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Bayern’s efforts to revamp their squad also include the acquisition of 18-year-old Australian winger Nestory Irankunda, whose deal will be effective next month. Additionally, Spanish winger Bryan Zaragoza’s move from Granada has been made permanent after his initial loan. These signings reflect Bayern’s strategic approach to building a stronger, more dynamic team for the upcoming season.

In parallel, Bayer Leverkusen has also been active in the transfer market, securing Aleix Garcia from Girona. Garcia, who played a pivotal role in Girona’s third-place finish in LaLiga, signed a five-year contract with Leverkusen.

Sporting managing director Simon Rolfes highlighted Garcia’s exceptional strategic abilities and precise passing, underscoring his value to the team as they look to strengthen their midfield under Spanish coach Xabi Alonso.
