Joe Burrow Eager for Comeback, Reflects on Football Mortality After Wrist Injury

Joe Burrow, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, expressed his excitement for the challenge of coming back from a wrist injury that ended his 2023 season. However, he also opened up about the mental struggle of continually recovering from significant injuries. As the injuries accumulated, Burrow acknowledged that thoughts of his football mortality had crossed his mind, especially after his latest setback.

Burrow shared that it’s difficult to quantify his recovery progress since his December surgery to repair torn ligaments in his throwing wrist. Despite this, he remains optimistic and indicated that he expects to be ready for the season.

Throughout the offseason, Burrow has focused on balancing his intense preparation with ensuring he is adequately rested for the start of the year, a message he reiterated during Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp.

The Bengals have implemented rest days for Burrow as part of their offseason program. Coach Zac Taylor mentioned that Burrow didn’t throw during the June 4 OTA practice open to the media, reflecting the team’s proactive approach to his recovery.

Burrow emphasized the importance of being ready for the long haul of the season, from early September through February, and appreciated the new approach to managing his rehabilitation and training.

This offseason, Burrow has shifted his mindset regarding injuries. Previously, he took pride in pushing through pain, but his experience with a strained right calf last year led to a change in perspective. After aggravating the injury early in the season due to insufficient recovery time, Burrow realized the importance of properly managing his injuries to avoid setbacks and ensure long-term performance.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding contract extensions for his top receivers, Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, and the personal challenges of his recovery, Burrow remains confident and excited about the upcoming season.
