Rodrigo Isgro Suspended for 5 Matches After Red Card

Rodrigo Isgro, the reigning world rugby sevens player of the year, faces a daunting prospect – missing the Paris Olympics. The Argentine star was handed a five-game suspension on Friday, a consequence of his red card in the Madrid Sevens final last Sunday.

Isgro’s actions sparked controversy when he responded to a late ruck clearout by France’s Paulin Riva with a dangerous spear tackle, earning him a straight red card. France had already secured the title, winning 19-5 and claiming the world series crown.

Following a judicial hearing, the disciplinary panel initially imposed a 10-game sanction but halved it, according to Argentina’s La Nacion newspaper.

The Argentine Rugby Union has the option to appeal the decision. If the suspension stands, Isgro will miss the pool round, quarterfinals, and semifinals, making it essential for Argentina to reach the medal games for him to participate.

Isgro’s impressive record includes helping Argentina secure a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and being named the 2023 world series’ best player.
