Steve “Mongo” McMichael, a legend of the Chicago Bears, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2024. This honor recognizes his significant contributions to the sport during his career. McMichael, now 66, was included in the seniors category of finalists for the 2024 class, highlighting his enduring legacy in football.
McMichael’s induction comes after considerable advocacy from his wife, Misty, who campaigned for his enshrinement. While the announcement of his induction was met with great excitement, it has been revealed that McMichael will be unable to attend the ceremony in Canton, Ohio, due to health issues.
Betsy Shepherd, the family’s spokesperson, confirmed that McMichael’s battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) has reached a point where travel is not possible. Despite this setback, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is arranging for his induction honor to be presented at his home, ensuring he can still be celebrated.
During his career, McMichael was a key player for the Chicago Bears, contributing significantly to their Super Bowl win in the 1985 season. His performance earned him two Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro team honors. By the end of his tenure with the Bears, he had amassed an impressive 92½ sacks.
Jarrett Payton, son of Bears legend Walter Payton, will introduce McMichael at the induction ceremony. The 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame class also features notable modern-era players such as Dwight Freeney, Devin Hester, and Julius Peppers, the latter two of whom also played for the Bears. The Chicago Bears will play against the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame game on August 1, with the induction ceremony following on August 3.
