New York Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio is expected to miss the majority of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.
The procedure was performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and the typical recovery time is estimated to be between 8-12 months.
Mauricio, 22, suffered the injury while playing for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League on December 10. The young infielder was attempting to steal second base when he fell and grabbed his right knee, walking off the field in visible discomfort.
Mauricio made his major league debut on September 1 and showed promise, hitting 248 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs in 23 games.
He also impressed in Triple-A, batting .292 with 23 home runs and 71 RBIs. The switch-hitter was expected to compete for a starting role at second or third base in spring training. With Mauricio sidelined, the Mets will likely turn to Brett Baty and Mark Vientos to compete for the third-base job.
Jeff McNeil’s versatility allows him to play second base, which could open up a spot in the outfield. The team also signed utility infielder Joey Wendle in the offseason, providing additional depth. Mauricio’s injury is a setback, but the Mets have options to fill the void.
