The Malayalam film industry has achieved a milestone, surpassing the Rs 1,000 crore mark at the global box office in 2024, while other major Indian film industries such as Bollywood, Telugu, and Tamil are struggling with consecutive flops despite high budgets and star-studded casts.
The Malayalam industry’s success can be attributed to multiple blockbusters and superhits, including Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, and Aavesham, which alone contributed 55% of the total gross. Additionally, Malayalam cinema has contributed 20% of India’s total gross collection in 2024, surpassing Bollywood’s contribution of 38%.
The industry’s domestic net has also surpassed Rs 500 crore, with top-grossing films like Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, Aavesham, Premalu, and Bramayugam, all released in 2024.
This achievement is remarkable, given that the industry’s global gross was only Rs 500 crore in the previous year. The success of Malayalam films can be attributed to their unique storytelling, talented actors, and effective marketing strategies.
Bollywood, which had a successful run in 2023 with two Rs 1,000 crore grossers, is struggling this year, with only a few films managing to cross the Rs 100 crore mark. Tollywood and Kollywood are also facing a similar crisis, with only a handful of successful films this year.
The Malayalam film industry’s achievement is a testament to its resilience and ability to adapt to changing audience preferences, making it an outstanding player in the Indian film industry.
