Exclusive: ‘Goosebumps’ Writer Darren Lemke and 21 Laps to Bring Disney’s Club 33 to the Big Screen”

Disney’s exclusive Club 33 is set to become the latest inspiration for a movie adaptation. The club, known for its secretive and elite dining experience within Disneyland, will be the focal point of a new film script penned by Darren Lemke, whose credits include “Goosebumps” and “Shazam!”

The project is being produced by Shawn Levy, along with Dan Levine and Dan Cohen through their banner, 21 Laps Entertainment. This company is known for hits like “Stranger Things” and the recent “All The Light We Cannot See.”

The story of the Club 33 movie will center on a young aspiring detective who receives a mysterious invitation to the club. In this magical and exclusive dining establishment, members include some of the greatest and most iconic figures from history.

The plot thickens when a murder occurs on the premises, and the young detective is tasked with solving the mystery. The film aims to capture the whimsical and adventurous tones similar to those in “Clue” and Levy’s “Night at the Museum” trilogy.

Club 33, originally opened in 1967 near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, was created as a private dining area for Walt Disney to host celebrities and dignitaries. Over time, it became known as a prestigious and secretive club, notable for being the only place in Disneyland that served alcohol. The club has since expanded to locations in Disney World in Florida, as well as Tokyo Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland.

This adaptation is part of Disney’s ongoing effort to draw inspiration from its theme parks for the screen, following the massive success of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. However, other attempts like “Tomorrowland,” “Jungle Cruise,” and “Haunted Mansion” have had varied success.

21 Laps Entertainment, which is also behind the upcoming sci-fi horror movie “Never Let Go” starring Halle Berry and the highly anticipated “Deadpool & Wolverine,” is managing the project. Emily Morris, an executive at 21 Laps, is overseeing the Club 33 project.

Darren Lemke, who has a strong background in family features with projects like “Shrek Forever After,” “Turbo,” and “Kung Fu Panda 4,” brings his experience to the script. He is represented by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.
