Giants Acquire Robbie Ray from Mariners in Exchange for Mitch Haniger and Anthony Desclafan

The San Francisco Giants have made a remarkable trade with the Seattle Mariners, acquiring 2021 Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray in exchange for outfielder Mitch Haniger and right-hander Anthony DeSclafani.

Ray, who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, is expected to join the Giants’ rotation after the All-Star break. Haniger, who has an opt-out clause in his contract after the 2024 season, will return to the Mariners, where he spent five seasons before signing with the Giants last winter.

This trade marks a strategic move for both teams, with the Giants bolstering their rotation and the Mariners adding depth to their outfield and rotation.

The Giants also sent $6 million to Seattle to even out the 2024 salaries, and both Ray and Haniger will receive $1 million assignment bonuses for being traded.

In a separate move, the Mariners acquired outfielder Luke Raley from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for infielder José Caballero. Raley, who broke out last year with 19 home runs and 49 RBIs, will add left-handed power to the Mariners’ lineup.

These trades mark a serious shift in the teams’ fortunes, as the Giants look to contend in the highly competitive National League West and the Mariners seek to return to the postseason after missing the playoffs by one game last season.
