The life story of John Romero, the legendary video game designer and “Doom Guy,” is being adapted into both a documentary and scripted series. Romero’s autobiography,
“Doom Guy: Life in First Person,” will serve as the basis for the projects, which will explore his pioneering work on iconic games like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Quake.
The documentary, directed by Rob McCallum, will delve into Romero’s journey from his Mexican, Cherokee, and Yaqui heritage to his formative years in 1980s America, which shaped his innovative approach to gaming.
McCallum’s passion for storytelling and his experience in capturing the reason of iconic figures (as seen in “Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe”) make him the perfect director to bring Romero’s story to life.
Naomi Harvey will executive produce both projects under Golden Possum Productions, ensuring a high level of quality and authenticity.
Romero expressed his trust in the team, stating, “Talking with Rob and Naomi, I knew they were the perfect team to bring Doom Guy to life.” McCallum described Romero’s story as a “rock n’ roll, boundary-shattering, thrill ride” that inspires hope and kindness. Harvey added, “John’s story is incredibly powerful… a triumph over trauma, filled with compassion and inspiration.”
The projects promise to showcase Romero’s impact on the gaming industry and his remarkable life story, which has inspired countless fans worldwide. By sharing his experiences, Romero hopes to inspire a new generation of gamers and developers to pursue their passions and push the boundaries of innovation.
With the documentary and scripted series, John Romero’s legacy will continue to inspire and entertain audiences for years to come.
