Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” leads the nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with a total of 13 nods. The biopic about the atomic bomb’s creation is a strong contender in various categories, including Best Film and Director, which could mark Nolan’s first BAFTA win.

The film also received acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” follows closely with 11 nominations, including Best Film and a Best Actress nod for Emma Stone.

However, the surprise of the day was the snub of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which only received five nominations, including nods for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Absent were nominations for Best Film and Director, despite the film’s initial tie with “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” in Longlist slots.

Other films, such as “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest,” received nine nominations each, with some unexpected omissions in the director and leading actress categories.

On the industry side, Disney led the pack with 22 nominations, thanks to the success of “Poor Things” and “All of Us Strangers.” Film4 achieved its most successful BAFTA outing in over 40 years, with 30 nominations for films like “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest.”

The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, hosted by David Tennant, will take place on February 18. As the awards season continues, all eyes are on “Oppenheimer” and its potential sweep of the BAFTAs. Will Nolan finally take home the Best Director award? Only time will tell.
