Cincinnati Reds Sign Frankie Montas to a $16 Million Contract for One Year

The Cincinnati Reds bolstered their pitching rotation on Saturday, inking a one-year, $16 million deal with veteran right-hander Frankie Montas.

The 30-year-old Montas, who missed most of the 2023 season recovering from shoulder surgery, is expected to rebound to his pre-injury form, which saw him excel as one of baseball’s top pitchers.

Montas’ impressive 2021 campaign with the Oakland Athletics, where he went 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA and 207 strikeouts, showcased his potential.

The eight-year veteran boasts a career record of 37-35 and a 3.90 ERA. His successful return to the mound in the final weekend of the 2023 season demonstrated his health and readiness for the upcoming season.

The Reds, who ranked 25th in ERA last season, are banking on Montas to join their young rotation, comprising Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Graham Ashcraft.

The team has also added veterans Emilio Pagan and Nick Martinez this offseason, signaling their intent to contend for the NL Central title. By designating catcher Austin Wynns for assignment, the Reds made room for Montas on their roster.

With a strong young core of position players and pitchers, the Reds are poised to take the next step in their development. The addition of Montas, a proven starter, solidifies their rotation and positions them as a top contender in the NL Central.
