The popular video game franchise Just Cause has been adapted into a film, with Universal Pictures acquiring the rights and Ángel Manuel Soto, director of Blue Beetle, set to helm the project.
The movie will be produced by 87North’s David Leitch and Kelly McCormick, who recently worked on The Fall Guy and Nobody. Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will also produce, having previously adapted Tomb Raider and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The game follows Rico Rodriguez, an operative on deadly missions to stop The Black Hand mercenary group. With a grappling hook and wingsuit, Rico races against time to save the day.
The film adaptation spent years in development before Universal acquired the rights. The studio sees Just Cause as part of the growing trend of successful video game adaptations, following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Ángel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle received positive reviews, and he is currently preparing to direct The Wrecking Crew for Amazon MGM, starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.
Soto is also co-writing a Transformers spinoff with Marco Ramirez for Paramount. With a talented team behind it, the Just Cause movie is poised for action-packed success.
