Following Lawsuits and a Federal Probe, Tesla Decreases Model Y, S, and X Range Estimates

Tesla has made remarkable adjustments to the estimated range of several Model Y, S, and X vehicles in the US market, with some trims experiencing a reduction of up to six percent.

The online configurator now reflects these changes, showing a reduced estimated range of 285 miles for the Model Y Performance trim, down from 303 miles previously.

Similarly, the Model Y Long Range has decreased to 310 miles from 330, while the Model X Plaid has dropped to 326 miles from 333.

The Model S Plaid with 19-inch wheels has also seen a serious reduction, from 396 miles to 359.

These changes only apply to US listings, with UK and EU estimates remaining unchanged. Other vehicles, such as the Cybertruck, Model 3, and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, are also unaffected.

Tesla has not provided an official explanation for the revisions, but internal documents suggest that the changes are attributed to “comfort and functionality improvements” that require more energy, as well as the implementation of revised EPA testing requirements resulting in higher consumption and reduced range.

This development comes after years of criticism that Tesla has overstated its range estimates, with the EPA previously accusing CEO Elon Musk of exaggerating the 400-mile range of the Tesla Model S Long Range in 2020.

Last October, the DOJ launched an investigation into Tesla’s estimated mileage following reports of intentionally inflated figures. These adjustments may be a step towards greater accuracy and transparency in Tesla’s range estimates.
