“Hit Man” Movie Review: A Playful and Offbeat Exploration of Murder for Hire

Richard Linklater’s latest film, “Hit Man”, is a darkly comedic masterpiece that subverts expectations and delves into the world of contract killing with wit and charm.

Based on a true story, the film follows Gary Johnson, a philosophy professor turned undercover hitman, who finds himself torn between his dual identities.

Glen Powell shines in the lead role, bringing depth and nuance to a character that is both charming and ruthless. Adria Arjona co-stars as Madison, a woman seeking escape from an abusive husband, and their chemistry on screen is undeniable.

“Hit Man” Movie Review (20TH CENTURY FOX)

The film’s exploration of identity, authenticity, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction is thought-provoking and engaging. Linklater’s direction is superb, making this a standout in his already impressive filmography.

The movie’s ability to balance multiple genres like rom-com and crime thriller in singular scenes is incredible and so fun to watch.

With its flawless pacing, witty dialogue, and talented cast, “Hit Man” is a must-watch that will leave you laughing, thinking, and eager to revisit.

Powell’s performance is a highlight, showcasing his range and versatility as an actor. Arjona also delivers a commendable performance, bringing depth and vulnerability to her character.

The supporting cast, including Austin Amelio, Retta, and Sanjay Rao, adds to the film’s humor and charm. “Hit Man” may not reinvent the wheel, but it’s a wholly original foray into the hitman genre, offering a fresh perspective and a unique voice.

It’s a movie that will likely become a comfort watch for many, and solidifies Linklater’s place as one of the greats. Don’t miss “Hit Man” when it premieres on Netflix on June 7th, 2024.
