Mike McCarthy of the Cowboys Appoints Ex-Jets Coach as Right-Hand Man to Assist in Job Security

Mike McCarthy is facing what might be his final opportunity to retain his position as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season, which is likely why he will take on the role of play-caller. In his effort to salvage his job, McCarthy will enlist the help of former Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer will step in to replace Kellen Moore, who departed to become the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers after being dismissed by the Cowboys. Moore will now work with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert instead of the interception-prone Dak Prescott.

Moore’s exit followed the Cowboys’ announcement that six assistant coaches with expiring contracts would not be returning, prompting a search for a new offensive coordinator.

McCarthy expressed his enthusiasm about Schottenheimer’s appointment, stating, “I am very happy to have Brian take on this key role with our team. He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go.”

Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, served as the Cowboys’ offensive consultant in 2022-23 and was previously the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator under Urban Meyer.

His background includes roles as offensive coordinator for the Jets (2006–2011), St. Louis Rams (2012–2014), University of Georgia (2015), and Seattle Seahawks (2018–2020).

McCarthy praised Schottenheimer’s extensive experience, noting, “Brian has an exceptionally strong foundation, history, and relationships beyond his time here that translate very well into understanding what our approach to operating and executing will be for the future.” He expressed confidence that this transition will bring the growth and results the team is aiming for.
