Yankees’ Ex-Slugger Puts Off Opt-Out Clause: Will He Be Jobless Again?

Luke Voit is signaling to major league teams that he’s ready and available. With a strong spring performance, including a .357 batting average and two home runs in 11 games, Voit is waiting in Florida for interested clubs to reach out.

Voit has offered the Milwaukee Brewers additional time to decide on his future with the team. His minor-league deal included an opt-out clause that came into effect on Thursday, but Voit has extended the deadline for the Brewers to next Friday. He hopes that if the Brewers choose not to keep him, another team will step in to offer him a spot.

Ex-Slugger (Yankees)

As Voit shared with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he’s focused on making the Brewers’ decision as difficult as possible. “I’m just concentrating on my game and hoping for a positive outcome,” he said. “I haven’t had much luck recently, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a favorable break.”

Voit, who claimed the AL home run title in 2020, was traded by the Yankees to the San Diego Padres after Anthony Rizzo took over first base and DJ LeMahieu’s versatility increased his value.

Last season, Voit was moved again by the Padres to facilitate the acquisition of Juan Soto from the Nationals. Following his non-tender by Washington, Voit signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers, seeking a fresh opportunity.
