Former Tennis Star Patrick McEnroe Predicts Djokovic Might Win ‘Four or Five’ More Grand Slam Titles

Former tennis player and U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe has suggested that Novak Djokovic could secure an additional “four or five” Grand Slam titles before he retires. Djokovic, who equaled Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam wins with his Australian Open victory on Sunday, appeared dominant throughout the tournament.

McEnroe remarked to CNN’s Amanda Davies that Djokovic’s current form and health make him a strong contender. “He seems as fit as ever,” McEnroe said. “I believe he’s the favorite at three out of four Grand Slams for at least the next two years.”

Djokovic’s win at the Australian Open was his 10th title at the tournament, a record surpassed only by himself. His emotional response to this victory, which included tears of joy, contrasted sharply with his recent tumultuous year. After being deported from Australia in 2022 over vaccination issues, Djokovic was also barred from the U.S. Open, a situation that fueled much global controversy.

McEnroe suggested that Djokovic’s ongoing drive, partly fueled by his past struggles, might be making him an even greater threat. “He’s playing as well as ever, which is remarkable at 35,” McEnroe noted, recalling his own achievements as a semifinalist at the Australian Open in 1991 and a French Open doubles winner in 1989.

Australian player Nick Kyrgios also weighed in, predicting that Djokovic could easily reach 28 Grand Slam titles. The debate over the greatest of all time in men’s tennis continues, with Djokovic, Nadal, and Roger Federer all in contention. McEnroe acknowledged Djokovic’s impressive achievements, including a superior head-to-head record against Nadal and Federer, though he stopped short of declaring Djokovic the greatest of all time.

Looking ahead, McEnroe noted that while Nadal is expected to be a strong contender at the French Open, Djokovic would be the one to beat at Wimbledon and potentially the U.S. Open, assuming he is allowed to compete.
