Jesus Alou, a former Major League Baseball player who spent 15 seasons with the Giants, Astros, A’s, and Mets, has passed away at the age of 80, according to ESPN. MLBtraderumors.com provided additional details on his career.
Part of one of baseball’s most legendary families, Jesus was the younger brother of All-Stars Felipe and Matty Alou. He began his professional career by signing with the Giants in 1959.
After spending more than three seasons in the minor leagues, he made his Major League debut at 21 in 1963, where he made history by joining his brothers in the San Francisco outfield during his rookie year.
Although Felipe was traded to Milwaukee the following offseason, Jesus and Matty remained teammates in San Francisco for several more years.
Over the course of 1,380 Major League games, Alou posted a .280/.305/.353 batting line. Not known for his power, he hit just 32 home runs but accumulated 1,216 hits, consistently reaching double digits in doubles for eight consecutive seasons.
While Jesus didn’t reach the same individual accolades as his brothers, his longevity in the league and contributions as a dependable player spanned a decade and a half, including winning two World Series titles.
Alou won back-to-back championships with the A’s in 1973 and 1974 as a valuable role player. He wrapped up his career by signing with the Mets for the 1975 season, marking the end of his time in the big leagues.
