Despite speculation about the New England Patriots potentially pursuing Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, Mac Jones appears to remain their top choice under center.
Following a coaching overhaul that saw Bill O’Brien return as offensive coordinator and the end of the Joe Judge/Matt Patricia era, the Patriots have made outstanding additions to their offense by signing JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mike Gesicki.
Given these developments, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper forecasts that the Patriots will focus on strengthening their defense with their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Although the acquisition of Smith-Schuster and Gesicki addresses some offensive needs, the Patriots are not compelled to select a receiver in this draft.
Instead, Kiper suggests that enhancing the secondary is now a priority. With Jonathan Jones re-signed and Jack Jones showing promise in his rookie season, additional cornerback depth is essential. Kiper highlights Joey Porter Jr. as a strong candidate; Porter, a 6-foot-2 cornerback with a remarkable 4.46-second 40-yard dash time, excelled in coverage last season and is known for his physical play.
Kiper did consider slotting in wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba from Ohio State but eventually leaned towards addressing defensive needs. Under Bill Belichick, the Patriots have selected only one cornerback in the first round, Devin McCourty, in 2010. After finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs for the second time in three years, the Patriots aim to rebound with strategic draft choices.
