Novak Djokovic Wins Australian Title in Dramatic Final, Marking Return After Deportation

Novak Djokovic has made a triumphant return to Australia, clinching titles and gearing up for the Australian Open, twelve months after his deportation from the country.

Djokovic secured his first title in Australia since last year’s controversy, by defeating American Sebastian Korda in a thrilling three-set final at the Adelaide International on Sunday, with a scoreline of 6-7(8) 7-6(3) 6-4.

In the second set, facing a championship point at 5-6, Djokovic seemed on the brink of an unexpected defeat to the world No. 33. His frustration was evident after Korda claimed the first set, as he shouted and gestured towards his player’s box.

“I’d like to thank my team for handling me, tolerating me in the good and bad times today,” Djokovic said, according to Sky Sports.

“I’m sure they didn’t have such a blast with me going back and forth with them, but I appreciate them being here.”

Despite the tense moments, Djokovic’s experience as a 21-time grand slam winner shone through. He saved the championship point, won the second set in a tiebreak, and eventually secured the title in the third set.

This victory marked Djokovic’s 92nd tour-level trophy, equalling Rafael Nadal’s record for the fourth-most singles titles in the Open Era, trailing only Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103), and Ivan Lendl (94).

“It’s been an amazing week and you guys made it even more special. For me to be standing here is a gift, definitely,” Djokovic told the crowd, as reported by the ATP website. “I gave it all today and throughout the week in order to be able to get my hands on the trophy.

The support that I’ve been getting in the past 10 days is something that I don’t think I’ve experienced too many times in my life, so thank you so much [to] everyone for coming out every single match.”

Djokovic’s win sets a perfect stage for his Australian Open campaign, where he aims to secure his 10th title and match Nadal’s men’s record of 22 grand slam titles. The Australian Open is set to begin on January 16 in Melbourne.
