Former Yankees Batter Hits Another Long Ball but Could Be Jobless Soon

Luke Voit (Milwaukee Brewers)

What further actions can Luke Voit take?

The former Yankees power hitter and 2020 AL home run leader hit his second spring training home run on Thursday—just as the Milwaukee Brewers faced a decision on whether to include him on the 40-man roster. If the Brewers choose not to, Voit has the option to become a free agent. Post-game, Voit mentioned that he would allow the Brewers a bit more time to reach a decision.

Voit, now 32, is hitting .357 (10-for-28) with two home runs in 11 Cactus League games.

Voit stated, “I can only focus on my performance and continue swinging as I have. The rest will sort itself out,” as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I haven’t had much luck lately, so I’m hoping the baseball gods will favor me soon.”

Last season, Voit was traded by the San Diego Padres to facilitate their acquisition of Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals. Subsequently, the Nationals non-tendered him, leading Voit to sign a minor-league contract with the Brewers.

Voit remarked, “We’ll see what the day brings. I expect discussions with Brewers general manager Matt Arnold, but nothing is finalized yet. We’ll find out within the next 24 hours.”

He added, “All I’m doing is making their choice more challenging. If they decide against it, I’ll opt out and see if another team shows interest.”
