Honda Reports 6.4% Decline in Global Auto Production for 2022

Honda has disclosed its production figures for 2022, revealing a total of 3,870,161 vehicles manufactured, marking a 6.4 percent decline compared to 2021. This marks the fourth consecutive year of reduced year-over-year production.

In Japan, Honda produced 643,973 vehicles, showing a 4.6 percent increase, and saw a 15 percent rise in exports, totaling 76,704 units.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the company assembled 831,908 automobiles, reflecting a slight 2.9 percent decrease. Sales figures in the U.S. for 2022 were 983,507 vehicles, down seriously by 32.9 percent from the previous year’s 1,466,630 units, split between 881,201 Honda models and 102,306 Acura models.

The top-selling Honda model in the U.S. was the CR-V, with 238,155 units delivered, a drop of 34.1 percent from the prior year. Acura’s best-selling vehicle, the MDX, saw 46,425 units sold, down 22.7 percent.

Looking ahead, Honda plans to expand its lineup with more electrified vehicles. The U.S. market will soon see the introduction of a new Civic Hybrid available in sedan and hatchback variants, though specific powertrain details have not yet been disclosed.

In Europe, the emodel features a 2.0-liter combustion engine paired with two electric motors producing a combined output of 181 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque.

Scheduled for the 2024 model year, Honda will launch the Prologue electric crossover, built on General Motors’ Ultium platform. Despite appearing compact, it boasts a substantial 121.8-inch wheelbase, larger than Honda’s Passport.

Interior features include an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.3-inch infotainment display, with further powertrain details awaited.

Acura is set to introduce its own Ultium-based EV, reviving the ZDX nameplate, with specific details remaining scarce. Additionally, Acura is preparing the Integra Type S, featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing “over 300 horsepower,” paired with a six-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels.
