Ex-Yankees Slugger on Fire Opts Out in Search of New Team: Any Interested Parties?

Major League Baseball teams, take note: A proven power hitter is now available. Luke Voit, who won the American League home run title in 2020 and formerly played for the Yankees, has opted out of his minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is now exploring opportunities with other major league clubs. Voit, who had a strong spring training, could be an asset to any lineup or bench.

Voit had given the Brewers extra time to decide on his future but has now chosen to seek opportunities elsewhere. Recently, he mentioned that another team was willing to offer him $5 million for a roster spot. He expressed hope that if the Brewers did not make a move, another team might quickly step in.

Voit was pulled from the Brewers’ starting lineup last Friday and has not been present at their camp over the weekend. He posted impressive spring stats with a .316 batting average, two home runs, four RBIs, and an .859 OPS.

In a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Voit remarked, “I’m just making their decision tougher. I’m focusing on my performance and hoping for a break soon.”

After leading the AL in home runs in 2020, Voit was traded from the Yankees to the Padres when Anthony Rizzo joined the Yankees. He was subsequently traded from the Padres to the Nationals in the Juan Soto deal and then non-tendered. Voit signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers but is now looking for a major league opportunity.

The Philadelphia Phillies, currently seeking a power hitter due to Rhys Hoskins’ season-ending knee surgery and Bryce Harper’s uncertain return from Tommy John surgery, might find Voit to be a valuable addition to their roster or bench.
