Mark Briscoe made his appearance on “AEW Dynamite” this past Wednesday, facing Jay Lethal to commemorate his late brother, Jay Briscoe, who passed away earlier this month.
Tony Khan revealed that he had to fight vigorously to secure Mark’s spot on the show, as Warner Bros. Discovery had previously banned the Briscoes from appearing on AEW programming on TBS and TNT. The reasons for this ban were reportedly twofold.
Initially, it was believed that the ban was due to Jay Briscoe’s past homophobic tweets from 2013, which he had repeatedly apologized for. However, recent reports from the “Wrestling Observer Newsletter” suggest that WBD’s concerns also included the Briscoes’ past use of the Confederate Flag on their wrestling gear.
The article explains that these issues prevented AEW from airing a tribute show for Jay Briscoe on TBS or TNT following his death. Due to AEW’s contract with WBD, the media company held the authority to restrict appearances on its platforms, leaving Tony Khan with limited options until he managed to persuade the executives to reconsider.
Fortunately, it appears that WBD has eased its restrictions on Mark Briscoe’s appearances on AEW television. This week’s “Dynamite” featured a tribute video for Jay Briscoe and included discussions about his career from the commentary team.
