The Volvo XC90 midsize luxury SUV has been awarded the prestigious 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
This recognition comes after the IIHS implemented more stringent criteria for its TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) and TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) awards.
The enhanced requirements focus on improved side crash protection, better pedestrian crash prevention systems, and the removal of vehicles with subpar headlights from the list of qualifiers.
These changes reflect the IIHS’s commitment to advancing vehicle safety standards.

The most important update to the IIHS criteria is the revised side crash test, which now involves 82% more energy than the original test. Vehicles must achieve an acceptable or good rating to qualify for TSP, and a good rating is mandatory for the TSP+ award.
Both the mild hybrid (XC90) and plug-in hybrid (XC90 Recharge) versions of the XC90 have earned the TSP+ award.
Besides its award-winning safety features, the XC90 Recharge offers up to 35 miles of all-electric driving in Pure mode.
Volvo Cars has made sustainability a key focus alongside safety, with plans to sell only fully electric vehicles by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2040.
