Tragedy struck on Australia’s Gold Coast on Monday when two helicopters collided in mid-air, resulting in four deaths and three critical injuries. The accident occurred around 2 pm near Main Beach, a popular tourist destination south of Brisbane.
Emergency services faced serious challenges accessing the crash site, which was located on a sand bank near Sea World Resort. According to authorities, thirteen people were on board the two helicopters, with four succumbing to their injuries and six sustaining minor injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the collision occurred when one helicopter was taking off and the other was landing. Witnesses described the moment of impact, which left one helicopter upside down and the other landed safely on a nearby island.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation into the accident, with a team of experts deployed to the site to gather evidence and interview witnesses. A preliminary report is expected within six to eight weeks, followed by a comprehensive final report.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk expressed her condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy.” The area surrounding the crash site has been closed to traffic, and motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and authorities are working tirelessly to determine the cause of the accident and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
