Is a Subway Series on the Horizon for the Yankees and Mets? Crystal Ball Forecasts

At last, the much-anticipated Opening Day is upon us, marking the end of a long winter, an extended spring training, and the monotonous days of March that had us yearning for real baseball. Today, Gerrit Cole will take the mound at Yankee Stadium, ready to start the 2023 season.

But as with many seasons past, the Yankees are deeply into uncertainty. There are high hopes for a parade through Lower Manhattan. With a roster brimming with talent, many believe the Yankees will edge out the East, even if just barely.

Gerrit Cole leads Yankees into a competitive Opening Day (New York Yankees)

Yet, doubts persist. Injuries seem rampant, and the division promises to be fiercely competitive. On Day One, the Blue Jays are already posing a threat to the Yankees, while the Astros continue to be a dominant force. Vegas odds favor Houston to potentially repeat their past successes against the Yankees.

Despite the tension and lack of clarity, the excitement of a new baseball season is undeniable. My predictions and observations are mixed with some Mets insights.

*Who will be pivotal for the pitching staff?

Gerrit Cole is the obvious choice. His performance is crucial; without him, the Yankees wouldn’t just miss the East—they might miss the playoffs entirely. Cole’s strikeouts, durability, and consistent presence—leading the majors with 33 starts last season—are invaluable. However, Carlos Rodon’s recent elbow issues cast doubt, and his return from the IL is eagerly awaited. Rodon’s potential could be key, but he needs to prove his durability.

*Rookie of the Year pick?

Anthony Volpe seems like a strong contender, although Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson, last year’s top prospect, will provide stiff competition.

*Which opponents pose the biggest threat?

Beyond the Astros, the Blue Jays are a huge concern. They surged after a managerial change, boasting a powerful rotation and an offense that could rival the Yankees—unless Volpe emerges as a transformative force.
