Impact of Deportation: Novak Djokovic Credits Setback for Success

Novak Djokovic reflected on his extended hiatus from competitive tennis at the beginning of last year, attributing it to helping him achieve remarkable successes, as he addressed reporters ahead of the 2023 Australian Open on Saturday.

In the early months of 2022, Djokovic participated in only two tournaments due to his vaccination stance and the resulting travel restrictions imposed by certain host countries.

“The enforced break allowed me the rare opportunity to focus on intensive training,” Djokovic remarked. “As top-level tennis players, we seldom have extended periods for training despite our demanding season schedule.

This break enabled me to refine my physical conditioning and enhance my game, which eventually led to outstanding achievements.”

Later in the year, Djokovic clinched his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title and secured his sixth ATP Finals victory. His momentum carried into 2023 with a triumph at the Adelaide International.

Looking ahead to Melbourne, Djokovic aims to secure his 10th Australian Open title and match Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles, which serves as a major driving force for the 35-year-old.

“I continue to pursue excellence in professional tennis because I aspire to be the best and to triumph in the sport’s premier events,” Djokovic affirmed. “The Grand Slams hold immense historical importance in our sport, and my success in Melbourne has been a source of great satisfaction.

I relish competing at Rod Laver Arena, particularly during night sessions, where I have experienced considerable success that I hope to replicate this year.”

Despite a recent hamstring injury sustained in the Adelaide International semifinals, Djokovic reassured that he is approaching his fitness with caution but optimism.

“I’m in excellent form,” he stated. “Ending last year on a high note and continuing that momentum in Adelaide was very encouraging. I faced formidable opponents and felt strong, especially in the latter stages of the tournament.”

With confidence in his preparations, Djokovic expressed his typical self-assurance about his prospects, emphasizing his positive outlook and readiness for the challenges ahead. Djokovic is scheduled to open his Australian Open campaign against Roberto Carballes Baena on January 17.
