The issue of class struggle has gained mainstream attention in South Korea. From Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite winning the Oscar to Squid Game becoming Netflix’s most successful show and gaining international fame, this genre sees no end in sight. The latest addition is the Manga-based South Korean TV show Golden Spoon, which first aired on 23rd September 2022.
Yet this show comes with a twist of fantasy that keeps the viewer engaged at all times. The fairytale-like storytelling is also very refreshing. The show is based on a webcomic (Manga) of the same name, written by gp04fb (username), that was published on Naver (a South Korean online platform) from 11th June 2016 to 16th June 2018. This received success and was adapted as the current TV show that airs on MBC every Friday and Saturday at 11:00 PM (GMT+9).

There have been many times when we wish to switch our lives with somebody else. Golden Spoon is all about that. This latest Korean show depicts the life of Lee Seung-Cheon, who is born into a poor family. This leads him to make some debatable choices, altering the course of his life.

He encounters an old woman one day who offers to change his life for the better. She gives him a gold spoon, charging $3 (4296.69 KRW) for it. She gives him explicit instructions as to how to use this golden spoon to change his fate forever. He has to use the spoon and eat three meals with someone house which is the same age as him.
This will lead to a parent swap between him and that person. Skeptical yet excited, he tries this strategy at his friend, Hwang Tae-Yong’s, house. Hwang Tae-Yong’s parents are extremely wealthy. This sets the premise of the entire show.
